Asus VivoBook X202E

TechSmart
  • Conclusion: Besides from the excellent build, touchscreen, and very good display and keyboard, the VivoBook X202E further cements its distinction by being the only Windows 8 touch-enabled notebook available in South Africa at the time of writing for the mainstream market. We certainly cannot imagine any user being unhappy with what is on offer here, we certainly were not.
  • Pros: Excellent build, Responsive touch screen, Very affordable price, Windows 8
  • Cons: Relatively slow processor, Not great viewing angles

Acer Aspire R7

TechSmart
  • Conclusion: Has the Aspire R7 succeeded at being novel and useful? To our minds yes, although it is probably more suited towards a certain kind of user, namely one who tends to consume content and wants a more convenient, accessible means of using the touchscreen. At R16 000 it certainly isn’t cheap.

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix

TechSmart
  • Conclusion: It’s not to say the ThinkPad Helix is without it faults. Located at the back of the keyboard dock is a flimsy piece of plastic that detracts from the overall design. The tablet gets very hot, even when only playing a movie or simply using the net, while we also found the volume rockers very difficult to press.

Acer Aspire V3-771

TechSmart
  • Conclusion: Admittedly, the V3 is not a perfect notebook. It has its issues (screen flex) and its omissions (no discrete graphics). However, taken as an overall package, most particularly with its strengths (beautiful display, comfortable keyboard, generous ports), ruling it out or dismissing it would not do it justice.
  • Pros: Beautiful display, Comfortable, spacious keyboard, Plentiful ports, Reasonable price
  • Cons: Screen wavers under pressure, Responsiveness falls off on left hand side of trackpad, No discrete graphics

Acer Aspire S7

TechSmart
  • Conclusion: The Acer Aspire S7 retails for a very expensive R25 000, by far the most expensive ultrabook we’ve reviewed yet. This is another reason why we feel that an i5 processor might be better suited, since it should bring the price down to more acceptable levels. Unfortunately, we can’t see it fall below the magical R15 000 (or even more magical sub-R10 000).
  • Pros: Excellent design, Gorgeous touchscreen, Solid keyboard, Full SSD
  • Cons: Touchpad is finicky, Battery life at about 4 hours should be much better, Very expensive
